TUNE IN AND CREATE!
In our increasingly media saturated world of Youtube and TikTok, it is nearly as important to understand film and video as it is to read and write. Whether they pursue filmmaking as a career or simply dabble with it as a hobby, the skills and knowledge that youth will gain from studying and practicing film will be a benefit to their entire lives.
This is not just a film program though.
In Tuned In Teens we aspire to integrate the newest understandings of the human nervous system to create an innovative program that helps them learn, make friends and unleash their creativity.
The first step for learning and development is making sure that we feel safe in our environment. Play is also a valuable part of learning which is commonly undervalued. When our nervous system is in states of threat or danger, our cognition turns off and we can't learn. So our first priority working with teens is to make a safe environment where they can play allowing them to have calm nervous systems and be more attuned to learning.
Also in environments that promote a calm state we are more capable of making friends which I think is really lacking in the world nowadays especially for teens.
When students are in a calm playful state then the next step is to focus their attention on what excites them because as my favourite director Christopher Nolan said, "You're never going to learn something as profoundly as when it's purely out of curiosity."
It's important to follow our enthusiasm both to live a fulfilling life but also because creators don't just need to know how to make stuff, they need to know what to make media about whether that's travel, history, cooking, sports, etc. With the teens in this program we will encourage them to explore their interests and find the things that make them come alive.
When we have peace and enthusiasm, we become energized to create. The ultimate goal of the program is to teach teens how to be creators. It's not just about making videos and films though. It's about becoming effective communicators and being able to use the tools of media to tell stories and share perspectives.
And also I want to encourage students to create what ever their enthusiasm leads them towards. That might not be making videos. It might be making music, or starting a business, or doing computer programming, etc. The key is they are creating something and harnessing a tuned in creator's mindset, and regardless of what they do want to create they will discover the value of understanding video to share their passion with the world.
When we tune into ourselves we find what we need to create things that people want to tune into.
Prepare your teens for the world of the future with the skills and insights of a tuned in creator!
